Yeah, for all the technology available to them, I’ve seen some spectacular screw-ups in self-protection of medical workers. Many years back I was hospitalized with viral meningitis (I survived, thank you!). They took a lumbar puncture ‘spinal tap’ of fluid to relieve pressure and for diagnostic tests on the fluid.
The next day the Doc comes to me rather sheepishly and explains that a lab worker accidentally splashed some of my spinal fluid into her eye while disposing of the plastic parts. Apparently she wasn’t wearing eye protection. The Doc came to ask my permission to take an HIV test on me so they would know if she was exposed. I agreed…. and I’m negative, thank you. But I was rather stunned that a hospital lab worker could be so careless.
