China to tax Venezuelan crude: the possible end of an alliance that marks another chapter in Maduro’s economic debacle

The Chinese government is set to start collecting the 30% environmental tax on June 12, effectively doubling the cost of Venezuelan oil imports, making it commercially unviable, analysts say.

There has to be a catch, some observers suspect, as it is hard to understand way China would suddenly turn its back on Maduro and potentially risk its significant stake in Venezuela’s oil industry.

“At the end of the day, does China want to hurt Maduro? That seems highly unlikely. There has to be something in the background to this that helps him”, said Jorge Pinon, an oil industry veteran and director of the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the University of Texas.

The tax’s timing, coming only three months after Joe Biden entered the White House, has also raised geo-political speculation about the impact which could potentially increase Washington’s leverage to force political concessions from Maduro.

Some experts say China has shown signs that it may have lost patience with Maduro and could even be willing to walk away from Venezuela.

“It’s been quite clear for some time that China’s interest in doing much for Maduro has waned,” said Maximilian Hess, an Asia expert with the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia.

Observers note that Venezuela has disappeared from the headlines in Chinese state media, a marked change from the past when Beijing reveled in Maduro’s anti-U.S. defiance.

The United States is providing Ukraine with high mobility artillery rocket systems that can accurately hit targets as far away as 80 km (50 miles) after Ukraine gave “assurances” they will not use the missiles to strike inside Russia, senior administration officials said.

In a New York Times op-ed published Tuesday, Biden said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will end through diplomacy but the United States must provide significant weapons and ammunition to give Ukraine the highest leverage at the negotiating table.

“That’s why I’ve decided that we will provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine,” Biden wrote.

I dove years ago with CAPT.Slate in KEY LARGO FLA  ..There was the original STATUE Of CHRIST of the ABYSS  a statue given by the Scuba Divers of ITALY to the Divers of The US ..CAPT SLATE takes tours there regularly .Its been there for many years and Capt Slate used to be the guy that cleaned it and kept it in good shape…Capt Slate is most likely gone now as this was 30 years ago.He was the most spectacular diver ..diving free diving without air tanks for 5minutes or more  to put a show on of him feeding his pet 5 ft Barracuda or the 8ft long Moray eel all this in 40 feet of water holding his breath .I knew him personally as I assisted him in a small way getting the Fla Keys designated as a National Monument to keep commercial fishing off the reef.

I helped him Financially to raise money at a Symposium held in Richmond.

The “Statue” was one place he took all his divers to,he ran 5 boats with about 20 divers on each to the reef almost every day. He had the largest group of divers who regularly dove with him..I did many dives with him when I was younger.He did on his own time kept the Statue clean and did his best to keep the Coral Reefs in  the KEYS pristine especially around Key Largo ..A Great Man…
