Unilever’s Polman is the people’s champion
So, what’s Paul Polman, chief executive of Unilever, doing at Davos, shareholders in the company behind Marmite and PG Tips might well be tempted to ask.
“I am attending Davos because there is simply too much at stake,” he rather grandly explains.
“We go to Davos to represent people who can’t be there — those who live in poverty or are too hungry to go to school, those who may not even have made it beyond the age of five because of malnutrition, natural disasters or simply poor sanitation.”
How lucky we are to have such people who selflessly take themselves off to a Swiss ski resort to represent us.
Polman incidentally picked up €7.7 million (£5.9 million) in pay and bonuses in 2013.
