Papua New Guinea’s autonomous region of Bougainville passed Friday a new mining bill that strips significant rights from Rio Tinto’s (LON, ASX:RIO) subsidiary Bougainville Copper Limited (ASX:BOC).

The ruling formalizes the province’s control of its own resources, which means the national PNG mining law no longer applies and that the agreement under which Bougainville Copper ran the Panguna open cut copper and gold mine for 20 years has been eliminated.

According to Radio Australia, locals worry the legislation —which transfers powers over mining from the Papua New Guinea government to the local legislature — gives too much power to Australian copper, gold, and silver company Bougainville Copper, whose Panguna mine sparked a civil war in the 1990’s and has not seen mining activity since then.

With no explanation, Brian Brookman last month lost the bank account for his pawn shop.

He had no idea why. Brookman says his store in Grand Haven, Mich., never had been in trouble with federal or state officials. And being in the pawn industry, he was required by law to get a city license every year.

“If there was ever a problem, they wouldn’t renew my license,” Brookman, a former police officer and Army veteran, told The Daily Signal.

After researching his case on the Internet, Brookman says he concluded that his banker, JP Morgan Chase, closed the account because two of his business activities — dealing in vintage coins and selling firearms — were labeled “high risk” by federal bureaucrats as part of an Obama administration initiative called Operation Choke Point.

Critics say Operation Choke Point, so dubbed by Department of Justice officials, seeks to weed out businesses that the White House considers objectionable.

The Justice Department contends the goal of the program is to combat unlawful mass-market consumer fraud, although recent evidence suggests otherwise.

A House report indicates that a primary target of Operation Choke Point is the short-term lending industry. A more expansive list of out of favor, non-financial businesses includes certain ammunition merchants, coin dealers, home-based charities, and sellers of pharmaceutical drugs – also lawful enterprises

Bummer about Robin Williams, hard to believe someone so funny and successful and seemingly caring would commit suicide. I know he struggled with depression. Sad he couldn’t escape from his own head, it must’ve been a torturous prison in there. Really going to miss him, his death stings a bit.

Strange kind of.  We were talking about Audrey Hepburn this morning.  She died at age 63 which I believe Williams was.

Both were giving people. Robin Williams would go overseas and entertain troops. Hepburn basically gave up acting to concentrate on UNICEF and keeping kids from starving.

Israeli expert says Iron Dome defence is a hoax

“An Israeli scientist and award-winning security expert has called the Iron Dome missile defence system “the biggest hoax the world has seen”, Addustour news website has reported.

According to Dr Motty Scheffer, “Today, there is no missile which can intercept other missiles or rocket-propelled grenades, and the Iron Dome is a light audio system which blocks Israeli public opinion and, of course, itself. In fact, all the explosions that we have seen in the atmosphere are self-destruction. The Iron Dome did not launch any rocket that could intercept at least one missile fired from Gaza.”

Sheffer added that the concept of open areas is a myth created to amplify the Iron Dome’s ability as a missile interceptor. He made an indirect accusation against the dome’s operating staff of misleading the public: “The missiles which were intercepted by the Iron Dome and did not reach the ground are hypothetical missiles produced and destroyed in the Dome’s computer control room; as of this moment, nobody has seen an intercepted missile fall to the ground.”

On the question of the economy failing, Dr. Roberts, who holds a PhD in economics, says, “Whatever blows, it has to be something the government can’t rig. The only way it could stop means the government can no longer rig it. It is such a huge pile of cards that if they can’t keep it rigged, a lot is coming down in a hurry.” So, what’s going to be the trigger? Roberts thinks it will be when the world abandons the U.S. dollar. How long can the economy be propped up? Dr. Roberts says “It will continue as long as it is tolerated. When will it cease to be tolerated? I think it will be when there is a general flight from the dollar. . . Once the general mood changes, and not just by gold investors, and people cease to hold dollars, then this won’t work. It will fail, and at that time, it will be almost impossible to get into gold. There just isn’t enough to absorb a major flight from a currency as large as the dollar. The dollar is just a huge currency.”

About the 4% GDP growth in 2nd quarter, Dr. Roberts says, “There is a lot of pressure on them because that can be a black swan event. You get a second negative quarter and you are talking about recession, and then you got people asking why are stocks so high? Then, people start bailing out of stocks, and since it’s rigged, you don’t know how big the crash will be. I don’t know if we can expect an honest (GDP) number. I do know that nothing has happened since the forces that produced the negative first quarter. There has been no growth in consumer incomes. There has been no growth in consumer credit. We see not only middle class stores like Sears, Macy’s and JC Penny’s being closed, but now we see it’s the dollar stores that are failing. That tells you people don’t even have enough money to keep the dollar stores in operation. So, where did 4% growth come from?”

Iconic actor Robin Williams dead at 63

Comedic legend and Hollywood actor Robin Williams died on Thursday at the age of 63 in what authorities believe to have been a likely suicide.

A spokeswoman at the Marin County Coroners Office told Al Jazeera that police believe Williams’ death to have been “a suicide due to asphyxia.” However, further investigation, including a forensic examination and toxicology test, are pending.

Williams, the star of numerous big-budget films including “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Hook,” won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a therapist in the 1997 blockbuster “Good Will Hunting.”

The acclaimed actor rose to fame for his portrayal of alien Mork on popular sitcom “Happy Days.” A spin-off of that character became the subject of “Mork & Mindy,” which started shooting in 1978 and catapulted Williams into stardom.
