But was unable to reply at the time because I was in Tocumen airport in Panama using their free WiFi which was overloaded , making login to the Oasis impossible .
Anyway on the topic of the dance tax :
I lived for three years in Brussels in the mid to late 1970’s and was involved with a church group which was arranging a weekend outing at an old abbey for young folks from the church residing throughout Belgium . One of the activities planned was a dance . We had to make a list of the recorded music which was played for the dance , and go to some taxing authority within an allotted time, to pay ‘royalties’ to the groups who had made the original recordings . The explanation used was that we were depriving the groups of what they would receive as performing fees for a live performance . In reality of course , most of the fee just went to the government bureaucracy which was collecting the tax . I guess there is nothing as permanent as a government bureaucracy , since four decades later the taxing continues .
