Looks like PMs holding the line after hours. That sounds like a memorable and a bit exhausting adventure during the near mid 20th century travel by rail were  passengers can take second to shipments. The scenic travel could make it worth it if not in a hurry  I can imagine with dining and comfortable seats or rooms vs the chaos of flying.  It sounds like it traveled along the river.

I rode this as a kid from Chicago to Minneapolis.  Burlington main on Wisconsin side of the Mississippi river was blocked by derailment, so we detoured on Milwaukee road on the Minnesota side of the river.  We spent all night inching down the line, last priority to all other traffic.  Frequent stops & long holds in sidings.

Has turned into Sodom and Gomorrah.
