Computer Crash horror story

Posted by Maya @ 20:58 on March 2, 2015

I haven’t been around since Friday.  Been a terrible weekend.  It started when I tried to install TurboTax on my MacBook Pro.  It has been running OS-X  10.6.8 for years and I never wanted to upgrade.  TurbotTax now says it wants 10.7 at least.   So I used the Mac OS built-in “Time Machine” to do a backup to an external WD hard drive I have.  Then I went to the Apple App store for a free download of “Yosemite” (I hate how apple names their OS’s)  In numbers, that is now 10.10.2 as the latest.

Three hours of download later, a few hours to install… and it freezes.   Tried disk utility to check disks… no problems found.   Tried the sequence again… overnight download.  Got a startup screen that asked if I wanted to restore my files from the ‘Time Machine”.   YES.   External disk online, hours later it is frozen again.

I spent the weekend wrestling with all this.  Eventually I had to erase the MacBook hard drive clean to get a download to start, but I found with the disk utility that my external ‘backup’ drive now was damaged and could not mount.

I’VE LOST ALL MY FREAKIN’ DATA AND APPS FROM SEVERAL YEARS BACK!   Despite my best effort to back it all up.

Back to the disks that came with the computer… 10.6.3 install.  Software updates will not take it up to 10.6.8 where it was.   Now the app store says I am not elegible for the free upgrade because it requires a minimum of 10.6.8… and I cannot get back there.

I’m hearing bad things about the changes they made in 10.10.2… not many happy users.  And now it appears that it was self-damaging when I attempted the leap of upgrades.

So I went to the Apple store and purchased a $20 copy of no-longer-supported 10.8  (Mountain Lion).  They say it will take them two days to email me a purchase code to download it from the app store again!  Sheesh!

I’m ready to scream!   I have never, ever, in a lifetime of using Apple products had a problem at all… until now.   And now it is catastrophic, with years of personal data, documents, and pictures all vaporized.  And not through my negligence, but software/hardware failures.

Jobs is dead.  Looks like he took Apple with him.
