Before seasonal agriculture work where they could come in get paid and then go back with a lot more money than they could make south of the border plus the currency exchange and take months of work off. Even some young American men would do it back then. Work here part of the year then stay there for a lot less and eat lobster or whatever. Meanwhile Ted Kennedy and the demos pushing up the legal immigration numbers. I remember on Maher show back in early 2000 had Pelosi on bragging that these migrants were outburthing American citizens in Calif and they made that easy with welfare plus getting full time jobs under the table. Then someone from south America came in with a map predicting how the whole US will be outnumbered by migrants which could only mean illegals by a certain date. Maher going along with the excuse taking jobs nobody wanted. Really was there that many jobs? No I started nursing as a teen still in highschool late 60s and went to school from there and back then a lot of elders who were from the era of the book The Grapes of Wrath crop pickers or farmers who told me that the south Americans came in and underbid the American workers including in worse conditions like the depression and wernt even supposed to be here. So even that, the jobs nobody wanted was a lie. I haven’t read about it but can guess back then Operation Wetback was probably because of a lot of angry American agri workers.
