How big is a 1 ton block of Gold? Only 14 Inches Square.

Formed into a cube, a ton of gold would measure slightly more than 14” or 36cm per side. A metric ton is 1000 kilograms, so the cube would be 3.22% larger in each dimension than for a 2000 avp pound cube. Could anything replace gold as a quasi-gold standard?
