Electronic Parts Welfare: The Global Cost of Electronic Waste

Posted by Mr.Copper @ 16:30 on May 2, 2022

Has anybody heard of the Ford Explorer recalls? For a software update? Because of electronic parking brake? that can let the car roll? What happens you wake up one morning with a dead battery and the parking brake was left on? Can’t be towed. A complicated procedure to over ride it.

I’m hearing about new toaster ovens with auto shut off feature if you open the door? Who the hell wants THAT?? The whole system is filled with welfare. And people can no longer afford to spend money on things they don’t need.

The other day a big PTB story about how we don’t really need to spend money on vitamins. I guess the PTB are getting concerned about consumers because gasoline and food etc is higher, I guess the gov’t wants people to save money. And businesses that sell stuff that nobody needs, should go out of business. Its going to be a survival of the most important businesses.

Parts sept 2016: Computers, phones, and other digital devices increasingly are made to be thrown away—which is bad for both consumers and the environment. Apple has already sold millions of the new iPhone 7, which started shipping this month. For many who bought one, the device replaces a perfectly good, recent model.

And so people replace things: smartphones, tablets, phablets, laptops, LEDs, LCDs, DVD players, portable music players. Whether from breakdown, slow-down, or just the availability of a newer model, people discard electronics at the slightest inconvenience. It’s not just laziness or a lust for the future, either; the economics of gadgets encourages disposal. In some cases, for example, buying a new printer is cheaper than buying a set of new ink cartridges.

The widespread use of semi-conductors and entrance of new players from Brazil, China, and India has made the manufacturing of portable devices relatively inexpensive, and the difficulty, inconvenience, or high cost of repair has made new purchases more economical.

Comment: Re Chip Shortage holding up mass production of cars?? Are you serious? The factories can build entire cars faster than these tiny chips? That means they are not practical to be used in cars. And should be kept to a minimum.
