Of course any six-year-old understands that they would love to jam Snowden down some federal supermax memory hole as an example to any other waffling NSA code-jockey having second thoughts about reading your grandpa’s phone records.

Kunstler today

The poet W.B. Yeats was right in 1919 when he said the center cannot hold, as if, following the first great industrial slaughter of modern times, he discovered the lethal vacuum at the center of modernity itself. There was a lot to be nervous about after the First World War. And right away, of course, enter, stage-right, Adolf Hitler. We’re still trying to explain that cat to ourselves, and not just the Germans, either. Who cannot be awed by the appearance of genuine evil in the world?

Although, perhaps most remarkable in our time is not merely the presence of evil, but the eerie dearth of heroes, and by that I do not mean supernatural gym rats in spandex outfits swinging from the Frank Gehry condos on cords of spider silk. I mean living, breathing humans willing to engage with great and implacable forces. American sniper Chris Kyle was one of the rarees, and he was a strange case, really. Not just because of his alleged frailties, his tendency to play up his exploits, brag, maybe lie a little, but because he carried out his lethal deeds mostly at a remove — up there on the dusty rooftops of Fallujah, where he could reach out with his sniper-scope and swat human flies from a position of relative safety. Yet it is not hard to identify with his mission to kill “bad guys” — especially two years after his loopy martyrdom on a Texas gun range at the hands of a deranged fellow soldier driven mad on his own wartime mission.

The more interesting hero to me is Snowden. The purity of his name alone kind of says it all. The documentary movie about his brush with history, Citizen Four (by Laura Poitras, also a hero), is now showing on cable TV. It follows Snowden during the days of spring 2013 when he went rogue on the National Security Agency and revealed to the public the extent to which the American government was prying and worming its way into everybody’s electronic life — ignoring the pain-in-the-ass constitutional limits on such mischief, and setting the USA up to be a police state beyond the frontiers of anything George Orwell dreamed about in his darkest nights of the soul.

It is more than ironic that Snowden was also Mr. Ed, because if you take his comportment on film at face value, never was there such an exemplary and seemingly normal American young man. His heroism resided largely in his amazing composure under the strain of events. He spoke English clearly and calmly, and reacted to the weighty events he set in motion with startling equanimity. He appeared to know exactly what he was doing, and with quiet, unshakable moral commitment. And then he disappeared down the gullet of America’s modern times nemesis, Russia, where he continues to taunt with his very existence, the NSA gameboys, lizard-lawyers and puppet-masters who cordially invite him back home to face, ho-ho, our vaunted justice system. Of course any six-year-old understands that they would love to jam Snowden down some federal supermax memory hole as an example to any other waffling NSA code-jockey having second thoughts about reading your grandpa’s phone records.

And then, strangest of all to relate, there is Putin. Our guys are moving heaven and earth to jam him into a red-hot Satan suit but it’s not working. The pitchfork they want him to brandish looks strangely like a sword of justice. Even Americans of modest intelligence, when not locked into the Kardashian trance, can detect something false in all our official handwringing over Ukraine — the made-in-the-USA failed state now eating itself alive on Russia’s border. Before February 2014, Ukraine was just a struggling, marginal demi-nation still economically dependent on Russia, of which it had effectively been a province for centuries. Mr. Obama and his haircut-in-search-of-a-brain Secretary of State, Mr. Kerry, thought it would be a good idea to make Ukraine our client state instead. The couldn’t have botched the operation more completely. I have to say, Vlad Putin’s composure in the face of this perfidious idiocy is really something to behold, regardless of the roughness of the polity he rules. Our guys, in contrast, look like something less than sheer clueless rogues. They look like empty suits.

Here we go again!

Former CIA Head Pleads Guilty To Mishandling Classified Information, Faces Year In Prison

Tyler Durden’s pictureSubmitted by Tyler Durden on 03/03/2015 12:30 -0500

In a ‘ripped from The Onion’-esque headline, WSJ reports that David Petraeus – the former director of the US Central Intelligence Agency – will plead guilty to a charge of mishandling classified information. The reitred military general, whose career was cut short by a very public affair with his biographer, reached a plea deal over sharing unauthorized information with her, in order to avoid an embarrassing trial. To summarize, the man trusted with all of the America’s most secret secrets just plead guilty to pillow-talk-sharing of classified information…

David H. Petraeus, the best-known military commander of his generation, has reached a plea deal with the Justice Department that will allow him to avoid an embarrassing trial over whether he provided classified information to a mistress when he was the director of the C.I.A. As NYTimes reports,

Mr. Petraeus will plead guilty to one count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison. Mr. Petraeus has signed the agreement, said Marc Raimondi, a Justice Department spokesman.

F.B.I. agents discovered the affair as they investigated cyberstalking allegations that had been made by Jill Kelley, one of Mr. Petraeus’s friends. Ms. Kelley, of Tampa, Fla., told the F.B.I. that an anonymous person had been sending her threatening emails that told her to stay away from Mr. Petraeus.

The agents determined that the emails were coming from Ms. Broadwell. As they investigated Ms. Broadwell, they learned of the affair and found evidence that Mr. Petraeus had shared classified information with h

truth about macs

Posted by eeos @ 9:54 on March 3, 2015

if  macs were atually a viable computer platform we would see them everywhere. show me any computer tech savvy individual or any large facility or corporation that actually use macs. they don’t exist and there’s a reason for it. if Apple were to make a huge move and gained a bunch of market share that would have happened and it didn’t. I don’t care what the value of the stock is this company’s existence is perpetuated by foolish people of others. good thing Americans are a bunch of consumerist because otherwise this company would be dead

In which the Wall Street Journal asks Otto Rock for advice on the Apple iWatch

You people out there are mad. A little story of how things snowball coming up.

So last week Ralph Rushton of Focus Ventures (FCV.v) mails me to show me a link to a very, very stupid story about how Apple will apparently need one third of the world’s mined gold per year for its new gold iWatch. It was total BS and by way of reply (which took about five minutes of searching for the numbers, part of which you see below) I did a bit of calculation to get to just over 9 tonnes instead of the incredibly stupid 746 tonnes estimate being made by morons who like hits on their articles more than facts.

As it happens Ralph sent our mail exchange thoughts to a friend of his who works at a shop called Ambrian in London UK. Fair enough. And Ambrian used the exchange and mentioned my name in the piece sent to clients as part of their own debunking. Also not a problem.

Here’s the point—> This morning i have the freakin’ Wall Street Journal on my ass, wanting to know all about the iWatch! Here below is the mail from the WSJ reporter:

Central Rabbinical Congress to Hold Demonstration in Manhattan Against Israeli Leader’s Speech

March 2, 2015

Thousands of Orthodox Jews will demonstrate in Manhattan this Tuesday, March 3, at 4:30 PM in front of the Israeli consulate at 800 Second Avenue, in reaction to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit to Washington to address Congress on the issue of U.S. policy on Iran. The demonstration has been organized by the Central Rabbinical Congress (CRC) of the USA and Canada.

“He has come without the blessings of the President, and his approach to this delicate issue has aroused indignation from people all over America,” said Rabbi Jacob Kohn, a spokesman for the CRC.

“Netanyahu claims to represent the entire Jewish people, and we fear that if we remain silent, people may believe that Jews in general approve of what he does and says. That’s why the CRC has called this demonstration: to show the world the truth, that Netanyahu and his state do not in any way represent the Jewish people.

Maya – you are not alone in having Mac OS issues

Posted by Alex Valdor @ 9:08 on March 3, 2015

I have been using Mac’s exclusively since the summer of 1984 , and have never been so dissatisfied as during the last few years . I had expensive CAD software which would not work with the newer operating systems . My ‘fix’ was to buy a large capacity external drive , buy the DVD of newer OS versions and make the external drive a fully independent Boot drive , so that I could start up the latest version from that drive , yet retain the functionality of my old OS from the internal drive of the desktop iMac with the big screen for precise CAD work .

After the introduction of iCloud , it became apparent that Apple wanted everyone to use iCloud . Even iDVD disappeared from the latest iterations of the MacOS .

Over the years I had learned to distrust the permanency of any files stored on Apple servers . When .mac morphed to .me ( Mobile Me ) , I lost a lot of photos scanned from 50 and 60 year old family photos . Then MobileMe was abandoned in favor of iCloud , so again I was asked to download photos and videos from their servers before they were trashed ( they did give several months notice , so it was not a panic transition, thankfully ) . The goal of course is to get one to subscribe to pay to extend the bulk of files beyond the ‘free’ capacity .

Now all upgrades are handled by online transfers – I don’t believe one can buy DVD versions any longer . AND ! the newest hardware versions of iMac and MBPro will NOT run earlier Mac OS iterations and peripherals . Nor will the latest Apple peripherals (external DVD drive for latest MBPro for example ) work with earlier hardware . Third party DVD/BluRay USB player/burners such as LaCie will work with both .

Saving the Iron Horses. Since 1956 these old locos hauled iron ore out of the northwoods to the Lake Superior docks to load the ore boats. It was quite a sight to see five of these pulling ore jennies. Two of these locos have already been preserved at the Lake Superior Rail Museum in Duluth. These last two will find new life on a private railroad museum.
