Pebble Mine will not be built: Friedland

Posted by ipso facto @ 10:37 on July 24, 2014

The proposed open-pit copper and gold Pebble Mine will not be built, according to billionaire mining financier Robert Friedland.

“The United States Environmental Protection Agency has just killed the Pebble Mine in Alaska. It will not be built,” Friedland said Wednesday during a presentation at the Sprott Natural Resource Symposium Vancouver.

Last Friday, the EPA suggested it might invoke a little used provision that may block the mine’s construction.

The Pebble deposit, near Bristol Bay, Alaska, holds an estimated 55 billion pounds of copper and 67 million ounces of gold. If developed, it would be one of the world’s largest open-pit copper and gold mines.

US Manufacturing PMI Drops, Biggest Miss On Record

Tyler Durden’s pictureSubmitted by Tyler Durden on 07/24/2014 09:50 -0400

But, but, but… the rest of the world’s PMIs are soaring as soft-survey data trumps any hard data facts. US Manufacturing dropped from 57.3 to 56.3 despite analysts that were convinced it should rise further to 57.5. This is the biggest miss on record, and the 2nd miss in a row. In spite of soaring markets proving the recoverty is just picking up and accelerating, new export orders weakened, manufacturing production fell, input costs surged, and employment tumbled to 10-month lows. But, stocks are surging on this dismal news…

Flash Crash July 14/15

Posted by Samb @ 10:06 on July 24, 2014

I keep reading that the manipulators are losing their grip based upon the quick snapback after the 2 day flash crash. But, but, but they accomplished their mission, imho.  Now that the dust has cleared, we can see that the snapback produced a lower high and as of today a lower low. So, the Intermediate up trend was capped at only 6 weeks where normal should be 4 and 1/2 months., the normal cycles are still broken.

Air Algerie Flight AH5017 Crashes in Niger Due to Bad Weather

Posted by ipso facto @ 10:02 on July 24, 2014

The disappeared Air Algerie flight AH5017 has crashed in Niger after flying through violent storms, it has been confirmed.

Algerian television station Elnahar confirmed the plane went down due to bad weather and an Algerian aviation official had told Reuters flight AH5017 had crashed.

The region was badly affected by violent storms and it was earlier said the plane was rerouted while it was flying over Mali.

Jihadists in Iraq Order Women Undergo Genital Mutilation

(AFP) — Jihadists in Iraq have ordered that all women between the ages of 11 and 46 undergo female genital mutilation, a UN official said Thursday.

“It is a fatwa (or religious edict) of ISIS, we learnt this this morning,” said Jacqueline Badcock, the number two UN official in Iraq.

She was referring to the Islamic State, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) which took over large swathes of the country last month.

Seems like they’d want to use the 370 for something a little bigger as a false flag. Just sayin’explosion

Well, most USD watchers focus on the Euro because it’s such a heavily weighted part of the index. IMHO what we should be watching is the Chinese Yuan and maybe to a lesser extent the Ruble. The Yuan is at its’ highest levels vs. the USD since March. Santelli has mentioned it twice now in the last two days.

So, we watch the Yuan and maybe Germany to see if they stay in the EU. Could be awhile though.

SnG, yer 8:52 proves it is MH17 with the flag above the 2 windows.

Exactly the opposite of whomever is postulating it was MH 370.

Wouldn’t be the first time sensastionalism was used for page hits.

Another Airplane Tragedy: Air Algerie Plane Carrying 116 Crashes Over Mali

Update: According to AP, the  missing Algerian plane went down in central Mali, citing a U.N. representative,  contradicting earlier reports that it crashed in Niger.

Not a day seems to pass in the past week without some airplane catastrophe: first over Ukriane, next over the South China Sea, now in western Africa over Mali where moments ago Air Algerie reported said that it had lost contact with one of its passenger aircraft carrying 116 people on board, nearly an hour after takeoff from Burkina Faso bound for Algiers. And what is most stunning is that just like in the MH17 case, the flight lost radio transmission shortly after it was ordered to change its course due to “poor weather.” According to an Air Algerie source “the plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route. Contact was lost after the change of course.”

A Resolution?

Indonesia to cut mineral export tax if miners pay smelter bond- official

The move will allow mining companies to restart exports even if they have yet to complete smelters that would allow them to process more ore on Indonesian soil.

“If you want to build a smelter then you’re eligible for a lower tariff for the concentrate export tax,” fiscal policy chief Andin Hadiyanto told Reuters, adding that no export tax would apply to finished metals.

The change comes six months after the government imposed a controversial escalating tax on shipments that brought copper exports to a halt. The tax was intended to force miners to develop smelters and mineral processing facilities and part of a government push to derive bigger returns from Indonesia’s mineral resources.

The new rate would be less than 10 percent, and scale down to zero as a firm’s smelter construction progresses, Hadiyanto said, while miners that did not have smelter projects in the works will remain subject to the escalating tax rate of up to 60 percent.
