It looks to me like the Covid has been taking away the “punch bowl” (fed on the brakes deflationary) and the Fed keeps pumping funny money into the system. (foot on the gas pedal) inflationary).
This reminds me of the 1970s. The fed was pumping money into the system 1934 to 1970. The over printing started true inflation higher prices. Including great profits and wages and a budget surplus in 1969.
So after 1970 they hit the brakes hard, removed the punch bowl, raised rates 5% to 21% in 1980. The higher prices during the 1970s was the lagging inflation results of 1934 to 1970.
So, in a sense like today the gas and the brakes were on at the same exact same time. They took their foot off the gas, and hit the brakes in 1970 to ’80 but the prices roared higher anyway as they were behind the curve until the 21% rates finally kicked in. And started a commodity deflation 1980 to 2000.

Unless they stop all this Covid crap, then yr Buddy will be dead right. We went out to the local pub New Years eve, thinking if it was too busy we’ll head home….we were meeting 4 others…Half the place was laid up for meals, the other half for drinkers….when we got there we had a choice of tables and not all tables were taken all night…normally the joint is rammed, New Years eve…like u have to fight to get to the bar… rammed .
The Land lady said because the current regs and their Chef getting a positive test, they had had to cancel all the Christmas week bookings, cost’em thousands and no compensation…..this is going on all over the country and elsewhere.
Plus the local Priest is getting so few at Mass, if it stays the same he will do less Masses next year at Christmas.
Clearly many people are still too scared by the government and MSM to go out and about and if that doesn’t stop, the economy has to fall over, if it hasn’t….the Rig maybe all that is holding this crap up….and yes they will print their way out of it, or try…..

I have a buddy here who is convinced we are heading into a depression and it may have already started. I’m not sure he’s wrong about that. If he’s right, how will the Fed respond? Going back to increased bond buying? They will not want to be blamed for the depression. Honestly, I’m not 100% sure Powell (Trump’s guy) will be confirmed to lead the Fed. If not and Biden places his own Fed Head, the spigots will be turned on full throttle.
Unfortunately, all this stuff takes time, and watching days like today so far makes it tough to see the positives that are potentially ahead.
Rates rising this am, USD up a little. We are reacting to rising rates more than anything. As you mentioned, Europe is closed, so let’s see what happens when they get back.
