Sorry for your loss. That was a thoughtful response about preparing the surroundings and recognizing the potential risks. There should also be more proactive geriatric doctors familiar with the aging process because so many things can be missed on a check up while they’re sitting on a computer just looking at lab results not the patient themselves including bringing up these subjects. Stair lifts can be 20k here. Better to be downstairs and not have to travel to the basement.  They also can have developed comorbidities, more than one issue.  Although mortality is higher for a senior broken hip not that high but depends on  medical care and home care after is important to prevent many of these complications and there are many. Still the risk of heart attack, heart failure or stroke is also higher.

If there at risk for falls or other life threatening conditions like strokes, heart and lung issues of living alone they should also have a medical alert button on them and now some have GPS. They also have a service for those living alone is they have a app to check on them every day, are you okay a simple yes or no  a family member or friend receives a message if they hit no or don’t answer. Advanced ones will call for help if there is no response from the family or friends notified.
