Once over the ‘stairs’, it is not too far to the Canada border.  I understand Canada required the prospectors to have a year’s worth of supplies with them to be let in.  This was more than a single man could carry alone.  Some prospectors hired help to hike loads up the pass.  Some who could not afford to hire help had to make multiple trips up the stairs.  Then maybe assemble a cart to carry the stuff farther on to the border.  That’s the story I heard, anyway.  Hard times for Gold fever sufferers.  (Some things never change!)

All around the world it’s almost like the angle of death is passing over more than usual.
I just got word that my brother who passed suddenly a few years ago step son died in a ATV accident. My sister in law survived the accident that killed her first husband and nearly killed her two yr old son who suffered brain injury’s she raised herself and involved in any disability group or special Olympics sports for her son and included him in community in everything who everyone loved until she met my brother who he bought a five acre country home is Wisc where they had a good life and their own ice skating pond. All had  sports equipment, horses and Harley’s  and  a Atv for Jeremy too.
He never sat around feeing sorry for himself and was positive with a kind spirit, Then suddenly while riding his ATV alone and due to physical  challenges had a seatbelt when  another vehicle came too close going the other way caused him to turn right then slipping in a ditch that overturned the ATV on him trapping him  he couldn’t release the belt and with the other vehicle that drove  off  leaving him to slowly asphyxiate,  There are times you can question why him instead of one of us in the family and Gods will but have to keep the faith. My sister in law is also a amazing person who also didn’t sit around feeling sorry for herself but raised her son and later her step kids who lost their mom now a widow twice and the loss of her only young grown son. I’m just glad she’s in a family community and not living in California where too many ill willed and vultures come out.
I’m not wanting any condolence but just a reminder when we see life is unfair it’s just not us it’s unfair to and how God, or the other guy can take you out anytime.

I always wondered what happened to the thriving Chicago and what brought it down to a opposite of what it was once a thriving working class community or I remembered visiting in the 60s after being pulled away from Wisc and extended family as far as Chicago but by 70 s navigating through the town to Wisconsin I could see a change already to potential unsafe areas that popped up I happened through.

I came across a story of the fire that ravaged through a multi story Catholic school that children were trapped two and three story’s high where there were no fire alarms, no fire doors, stairways and walkways made of wood, where along with the from no fire doors smoke nuns couldn’t get the children out. The whole building actually that started from below and delayed fire response way too long due to lack of initial alarm.

Even one of the band Journey was a survivor in that fire. There wasn’t a street that didn’t lose a child or more than one.

After the fire the memory’s were too hard on the whole town. The Italians moved first and new people moved in causing resentment , combined with racial unrest and demographic change, community was going away as more and more moved away and the place went down hill since.

With the new people and unemployment the church shut down and and reopened later as a food bank and resource center. I guess other business left too for similar reasons all because people in office didn’t have enough sense to protect  all though children.
