Although the Federal Reserve has been steadily raising the cost of borrowing, the real level of Fed Funds is rising nowhere near as quickly as the angst amongst investors.

Accounting for inflation, Fed Funds are still firmly negative! So yeah, maybe nominal short rates are much more positive than a year ago, yet on a real basis, the Federal Reserve is barely keeping up with inflation.

I know, I know – we are late-cycle and the economy is about to roll over… I know all the bearish arguments. Well, based on current fiscal and monetary policy, I just don’t see the ominous storm clouds on the horizon.

The Taylor Rule is by far from perfect and many economic academics have tried tweaking it to make it better, but no matter which iteration you are partial to, the Federal Reserve is still extraordinarily easy.

My daughter and her other call me up from finally getting to rest at night to look in the sky. Her and other said it’s orange and her other thinks it looks like a comet. It looks like a Sattelite to me but the thing is it wasn’t there before but about two weeks ago it appeared.

I saw that, looked like they didn’t see it coming. Looks like they need a stronger roof on the boats. Saw another one with aahs and oos by tourist in the background that sounded Asian as in the steam clouds of the new island had lightening coming from it. Pretty active little island.

By now most of you have seen the national news about a lava tour boat that was too close to a shoreline explosion and took a ‘lava bomb’ thru the aluminum canopy roof of the boat, injuring 23 people.  One in the hospital yet with a broken leg.  Story is here:

I believe this explosion was caused by the new ‘island’ I posted here a day or two back.  That underwater lava tube feeding that little offshore island very likely cracked open, exposing ALL the lava in the pipe to the seawater all at once, and you get a tremendous steam explosion with flying bits of rock and lava.  That was by far the largest water-entry explosion we have seen with this eruption.   That’s why it fooled the boat operator.  The shoreline has not behaved this explosively along the entire waterfront yet… until now.   New rules now… 300 yards offshore for the boats.

The helicopter pilots learned this lesson back in 1983 with the Pu’u O’o vent… you don’t fly over the vent even if it is ‘tame’, because a gas bubble can spray a fountain 1000 feet into the air quite unpredictably.  There is a Temporary Flight Restriction above the lava area up to 3,000 feet now.  Tour helicopters must stay higher than 3,000 feet in the affected area.
