In the 1930s and 40s to have a sales or clerks job in a local town retailer was a coveted position–a man could live modestly on same with a small house, a short [car], and kiddies…I have a book…a Pictorial History of Old peoria, Il…my hometown…and I am astonished when I see a “Moores’ Jewelry” shop with a staff of 9…that was pre-socialist era America…that is to say, before the Welfare State begun by Lyndon Johnsons Great Society program…wherein the career path for young, poor, black and white women was to have 4 or 5 babies by age 22 and collect benefits…
