1987—Too many investors tried to obtain “insurance” by selling index futures at the same time, which pushed S&P futures to a vast discount vs. the spot market. This in turn triggered selling of stocks and concurrent buying of futures by program trading operations – which put more pressure on spot prices and in turn triggered more selling of futures for insurance purposes, and so on. Interestingly, program trading curbs were scrapped again. We mention the case of 1987 because we believe today’s markets will eventually be faced with a “positive feedback loop” problem as well.

They are right to be nervous, as what Madrid/EU has done is turn a possibility into a certainty . There were lots of pissed off Catalans before, due to paying a very disproportionate amount into Madrids coffers and getting little back, now Madrid has pissed off them all.

The Euro has created nothing but misery for the Club Med countries and the Catalans have had the double wammy of having their economy wrecked and watching Madrid piss away their wealth and now they find that as far as Madrid/EU is concerned that is just fine.

Plus the Basques are equally unhappy…Spain/EU has got huge problems and morons to sort it out, what could go wrong…..Yet again only the Rig is keeping this pig afloat.

about the housing thing-it seems government programs (sec 8) is really screwing up the housing market . builders/investors are only interested in exclusive or sec 8. what is someone supposed to do who is trying to work but is far behind those on welfare? housing and health care are so far skewed from the norm that the middle and lower middle class are on borrowed time. throw in all those old student loans and credit card debt and a lot of people are broke and hanging on by a thread. now toss into the mix illegal immigration, vastly overcrowded prisons, all government debt, and the illegal drug trade.
