An aside

Some years ago I read one of Winston Churchill’s books about his time as a young officer on the Pakistan (India at the time) Afghanistan border before the turn of the century. He said that when they were on patrol and got fired on that they’d head over to the nearest village and burn it down. After a while no one fired at them anymore. Different times!
