It was a beautiful day in Hilo.  You can see the white telescope domes atop Mauna Kea overlooking the park.

The Merrie Monarch festival parade  encircled the town for two hours.

Some of the Hawaiian Pa’u riders in their long gowns… a tradition going back to the monarchy in the 1800’s.

Now I know a few local gals that are not afraid to bait their own hooks and drop a line.  They will carve up a catch and have some raw fish for a snack at the beach.  And later they will make you a fish dinner, too!  These are island people with deep cultural roots to the sea and land.

Just another little slice of paradise.  🙂
