You saw opportunities and you grabbed them. A lot of us had jobs and traveled on buses at a young age as well as being involved with churches. I never made 30 a week though and being a girl then we were more restricted. Trying to find something to do a relatives shop got answers like no lots of machines around you could get hurt. I saw a inequality between me and my brothers as far as jobs went in those days. These days many of those things don’t happen anymore and now kids are faced with what happened to you with that priest but politicians trying to shake them down and people really need to fight that. By eleven I could babysit neighbors babies for short periods which is unheard of now but really depends on the emotional maturity of the child. My focus was not so much buying things for myself because I had so many relatives making me things like dresses and dolls but making sure I had gifts for holidays and birthdays for family starting about the same age washing cars or whatever I could think up.
Things weren’t all that safe for little girls then by 10 there was some weirdo who would follow us girls to school who wore nothing but a blanket and would pull of the blanket and was naked. I wasn’t as scared as the other girls cuz I had brothers and I picked up a big rock to throw threw his wind shield so he didn’t bother me. Don’t know if they ever caught him but he frightened the girls to tears. He’d also park next to the school take pictures of us on the play ground.
These days traffic a issue with kids as well as bullies and drugs esp. by the time their teens. My youngest daughter had two different class mates killed by traffic. One crossing the street the other boy skating on the side walk and a hot rod lost control went up on the side walk hit and run left him there.
Parents are doing their kids no favor by giving them everything without at least earning it in some way around the house other than basic needs or helping them earn their own money or learning to save for something.
We also used to make our own things girls learning to sew or crafts boys with their forts go carts skate boards or whatever. We were more creative and more on producing then kids now who live in a world where they are being deprived and even discouraged like in school their childhood imagination where creativity starts. I remember when it started and people did notice that all they toys today do everything leave nothing for the imagination.
We also had more daily chores than kids do now. Parents have a hard time even getting them to clean their room. Whether that impedes their attitude when they do get a job someday I don’t know.
