Buygold, I happened to be watching them on this day so we have a way to go to get into record territory, but we’re getting there! Peak Swarm Spikes: Daily totals can spike significantly—sometimes reaching 150 to 300+ events per day at magnitude 2.5+—following major seismic events (such as strong magnitude 7.0+ or 8.0+ earthquakes producing large aftershock series) or localized volcanic/tectonic swarms.

According to the USGS, there have been 184 Magnitude 2.5+ earthquakes on Earth over the last day. Of those, 157 (that’s a whopping 85%) have occurred in the general vicinity of the massive 8.8 quake off the coast of Russia. When the Earth rattles as violently as that, it’s bound to reverberate for awhile.
