The 1953 Coup
On August 19, 1953, a coup d’état orchestrated by the CIA and MI6 resulted in the removal of Mosaddegh from power. This operation, known as Operation Ajax (by the CIA) and Operation Boot (by MI6), aimed to restore the monarchy of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. The coup was motivated by a desire to protect Western oil interests and counter perceived communist threats in the region.
