Even if he gets tariff revenue back on target, it will take ten years to make up the $5,000 per US citizen he pays out now, not including the $65bn p.a. interest he will pay on the borrowings for the $5,000. During which time the average US taxpayer is coughing up $820 per year for the tariffs:
But if tariffs were to actually work, the $1.4tn will never ever be paid back, as industries will have on-shored their production and tariffs will fall to zero, and instead of paying extra in the tariff tax people will be paying extra in prices for the cost of on-shoring – which I don’t deny is a good thing for national security and social cohesion.
