Saudi Arabia reportedly blocked Egypt from joining the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, its new defence alliance with Türkiye and Pakistan, despite Ankara pushing for Cairo’s inclusion.
Saudi sources said Riyadh increasingly sees Egypt under Sisi as an unreliable, aid-dependent partner with limited strategic and military value, while also objecting to Cairo’s close alignment with the UAE.
Egypt could still join the alliance in the future, but Saudi officials reportedly want to see greater reliability and strategic alignment from Cairo first.
