Storm Fatigue

Posted by Maya @ 3:16 on July 27, 2020

I’ve been elder-care house sitting with 89 year old Papa and helping keep him safe during the pandemic here.  Approaching storms are always a stressful time, preparing, and waiting.  The waiting is the worst.  Local TV stations went into 24 hour storm coverage, and this brought back stressful memories of working in TV myself.  I’ve been in the control room, keeping the TV station going on these marathon live broadcasts.  More tech stress on top of the storm going on.

So this afternoon when it looks like the islands will only take a glancing blow from the hurricane, I was starting to relax the tension a bit when the bad news came.  Papa’s youngest sister (age 81) had triple bypass surgery last week.  All was well and she was recovering in Honolulu and was due to come home, but delayed several days due to the storm and cancelled airline flights inter island.. This afternoon her heart stopped.  Papa is now the sole survivor of his family of seven.  Auntie Ruby will be sorely missed, and we are grieving at the house tonight.  I have had enough stress fatigue and sadness for awhile.
