When I had a 1974 econo van for camping some mechanic did that to me. He showed me two wires. He said when there done with the smog test switch back these wires so it will run right. When they did the test I think they knew but didn’t say anything. The only thing I could think about was okay this one is supposed to go there and this one here. Later in California all cars 74 or older were no longer mandated for smog just registration. I already donated it to the blind and thought darn that figures but at least his helped them I hope.

Reminds me of when I used to live in CA back in the days when cars had carburetors. You’d take your car to the mechanic to get it smogged and he’d lean out the fuel mixture to allow the car to pass the test (and the car would be running crappy) then when you got home you’d just have to adjust the carb back to where your car would run decently.

What a scam!

This is interesting. At least it looks as if an acknowledgment of reality is happening.

US Intel Officials Made Secret Trip To Damascus For Talks With Assad Advisor

The Al-Akhbar report provided the following details regarding US demands, according to an English translation provided by Syriana Analysis:

The American side made a clear and specific offer: The United States is ready to withdraw its troops completely from Syrian territory, including the Al-Tanf and Eastern Euphrates according to security arrangements supervised by the Russian and Syrian armies. In exchange for three US demands:

First, Iran’s full withdrawal from the Syrian south.

Second, to obtain written guarantees that give US companies a share of the oil sector in the regions of eastern Syria.

Third, the Syrian side to provide the Americans with full data of the terrorist groups and their members, including the numbers of foreign fighter deaths of these groups and those who survived, and those may return to Western countries, considering that the terrorist threat is intercontinental. And what we can get, serve the international security

I found and extra $1000 so threw some more mud at the wall. Bought 5500 shares based on their aggressive exploration program and recent acquisitions. Not recommending them, just keeping all my cards on the table. They’ve been over $7 and down to $.02. If the sector takes off I expect them to be a leader. Please DYODD!!

Exclusive: Cameroon cocoa exporters, farmers flee crisis in Anglophone region

LONDON/DOUALA, Cameroon (Reuters) – Cocoa firms operating in Cameroon have moved staff out of the Anglophone region of the country and farmers are abandoning their crops in the area, as violence between separatists and security forces intensifies, exporters and farmers told Reuters.

Sources say the deepening conflict has started denting cocoa output and flow from the southwest, stripping the region of its mantle as Cameroon’s top cocoa-growing area.

Telcar Cocoa, Olam and Theobroma are among the firms that have moved the majority of their staff out of southwest Cameroon due to safety concerns, according to several sources with knowledge of the matter.

Some cocoa farmers have also abandoned their plantations and fled, driven out by a rise in kidnappings, extortion and fighting between insurgents and security forces.

Hecla’s silver-copper project in remote Montana overcomes hurdle

Posted by ipso facto @ 11:28 on August 29, 2018

Kootenai National Forest, an agency that manages 154 forests and 20 grasslands in the U.S., announced today that they have approved the first phase of Hecla Mining’s silver and copper mine in northwestern Montana.

The Rock Creek Mine would be built beneath the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, an area of glaciated peaks and valleys that take their name from the area’s box-like rock formations. Grizzly bears and wolverines inhabit the terrain.

Despite the KNF’s approval for the project, the Associated Press reports there is no clarity as to when work could begin at the remote site because of an ongoing legal dispute between Montana environmental regulators and Hecla (NYSE: HL).

Medical Cannabis Offers New Hope for Those With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Posted by ipso facto @ 9:47 on August 29, 2018

Story at-a-glance

 Marijuana contains more than 60 different cannabinoids; chemical compounds the human body is uniquely equipped to respond to. Two primary ones are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
 Cannabinoids interact with your body by way of naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors embedded in cell membranes throughout your body
 Your body also has naturally occurring endocannabinoids that stimulate your cannabinoid receptors and play a role in a variety of physiologic processes, including metabolic regulation, pain, anxiety and immune function
 The endocannabinoids produced by your body appear to perform signaling operations similar to your body’s neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin
 Recent research reveals endocannabinoids play an important role in controlling inflammatory bowel diseases by preventing excess white blood cells from entering your gut and causing damage

I’m always harping about “financialization”=Combine financialization, neoliberalism and moral bankruptcy, and you end up with predatory, parasitic elites.

Here’s How We Ended Up With Predatory, Parasitic Elites

==
How did our financial and political elites become predatory parasites? Some will answer that elites have always been predatory parasites; as tempting as it may be to offer a blanket denunciation of elites, this overlooks the eras in which elites rose to meet existential crises.
As historian Peter Turchin explained in his book War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires, the value of sacrifice was a core characteristic of the early Republic’s elite:
“Unlike the selfish elites of the later periods, the aristocracy of the early Republic did not spare its blood or treasure in the service of the common interest. When 50,000 Romans, a staggering one fifth of Rome’s total manpower, perished in the battle of Cannae, as mentioned previously, the senate lost almost one third of its membership. This suggests that the senatorial aristocracy was more likely to be killed in wars than the average citizen….
The wealthy classes were also the first to volunteer extra taxes when they were needed… A graduated scale was used in which the senators paid the most, followed by the knights, and then other citizens. In addition, officers and centurions (but not common soldiers!) served without pay, saving the state 20 percent of the legion’s payroll.
The richest 1 percent of the Romans during the early Republic was only 10 to 20 times as wealthy as an average Roman citizen.”
Now compare that to the situation in Late Antiquity Rome when
“an average Roman noble of senatorial class had property valued in the neighborhood of 20,000 Roman pounds of gold. There was no “middle class” comparable to the small landholders of the third century B.C.; the huge majority of the population was made up of landless peasants working land that belonged to nobles. These peasants had hardly any property at all, but if we estimate it (very generously) at one tenth of a pound of gold, the wealth differential would be 200,000! Inequality grew both as a result of the rich getting richer (late imperial senators were 100 times wealthier than their Republican predecessors) and those of the middling wealth becoming poor.”

From the article in the previous post= is reason enough for contrarian investors to proceed with caution before going long on bullion

Posted by Richard640 @ 13:37 on August 28, 2018

Given this generally brutal price action in gold, then, we would observe that the flip to a net short stance by CoT large speculators is perhaps quite a bit behind the curve, if not at all “undeserved” — so we can follow the logic by which analysts are pointing to this rare bearish positioning as a “final capitulation” of sorts to mark the bottom of the gold decline. Simultaneously, the cluster of extremes generated by GLD’s sell-off — such as the RMI low, massive outflows, and extended monthly losing streak — would seem to suggest to seasoned market watchers that the battered and bruised metal might reasonably be due for a bounce, even if only of the “dead-cat” variety.

That said, the fact that we’ve already seen a number of headlines touting the net short CoT positioning as a valuable bullish signal for gold is reason enough for contrarian investors to proceed with caution before going long on bullion. And then there’s seasonality to consider; Schaeffer’s Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White notes that gold averages a loss of 2.07% during the month of September, looking back to 2010, with the median return arriving at a 2.43% drop (with only 37.5% of returns positive).

THE SIGNAL THAT’S TURNED EVERYONE INTO A GOLD CONTRARIAN–The precious metal tends to decline during the month of September, looking at returns since 2010 by Bernie Schaeffer

The following is a reprint of the market commentary from the September 2018 edition of The Option Advisor, published on August 24. For more information, or to subscribe to The Option Advisor — featuring 10 new option trades each month — visit our online store.

The centerpiece of most stock market media coverage this past week was the age of the rapidly maturing bull market, and whether or not the current run higher can be accurately and fairly described as the longest in history. It was a debate that clearly divided the financial world into the “closing level” and “intraday level” camps, and a useful diversion during this traditionally quiet post-earnings, pre-Labor Day stretch of August (although this particular late-summer period has certainly not been without its share of political drama, stocks have been so far relatively unmoved by it, on balance).

And so, while pundits have been debating the breadth and depth of various historical stock market corrections and rallies, investors appear to have grown increasingly — and perhaps climactically — bearish on the prospects for gold, the precious metal traditionally viewed as a “safe haven” asset during times of turmoil.
