Volcano report

Posted by Maya @ 3:51 on May 16, 2018

Monday was a nice sunny day, so the whole neighborhood was out doing yard work.  Mowing, chopping, hauling green waste.  Last night we could see the red sky glow of the lava, and hear the booms like distant artillery.  Small earthquake shakers are frequent.  Today I spent indoors, recovering from sore muscles.  Sitting here I can still feel/hear the air pressure changes of subsonic booms, just about the time another little quake upsets my balance.  I’m five miles upwind of the eruptions.   The summit crater Halemaumau was spewing an ash cloud up to 10,000 ft high this morning.  Ashfall to the southwest in the Ka’u Desert area.   Some ashfall made it 18 miles downwind to Pahala area.  Still waiting for more possible lava flow action in the east rift zone.  Sulfur Dioxide masks assembled, tested, and at the ready if needed.
