Thanks for enlightening me about the difference between volcanic action due to plate tectonics and your situation in Hawaii . I had always assumed the wrong mechanism .
BTW ‘our’ local volcano in Colombia was responsible for the second worst volcanic related death toll in the 20th century – the Armero event in 1985 , in which over 20 000 lost their lives as a lahar rushed down several valleys around the Nevado del Ruiz , including the one leading to Armero , a town of 29 000 residents , of which over 2/3’s were lost . Our town is over a mountain ridge from that volcano , so aside from a few temblors , we have no worries .
