I have cable internet out in the boonies… (Surprise).  I hear the satellite delivery is a bit cheaper… but less reliable.  Anyway, I opted NOT to take the cable-supplied modem/router.   I just rebel against paying 10-15 bux a month for the cheapest mass-purchased box that cable supplies.   For the price of ten months rental from the cable company I bought my own, top line cable modem and gave the installer tech the numbers.  He was impressed by my choice.  “Those things work great!”

I have a ham radio friend who has a ‘cabin’ down by the volcano where there is no cell service.  He has a ham radio link to his condo in Kona that is data interfaced to the ‘net, so he can at least connect to email via ham radio at his cabin… all off-grid solar powered.
