As a common-carrier, the Santa Fe was required to provide service to outlying small towns in Texas that didn’t see a lot of traffic. These self-propelled railcars, known as ‘doodlebugs’ provided US Mail, railway express, and limited passenger service to the wide open spaces of Texas.
