Konrad Adenauer also struck out into pastures new by supporting Ludwig Erhard’s concept of the Social Market Economy. This economic and social model is of course inextricably linked with the name of Ludwig Erhard – and Erhard quite rightly bears the honorary title “Father of the Social Market Economy”. Just a few months ago, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, we honoured his outstanding contributions to the development of our political system. However, Ludwig Erhard’s success would have been inconceivable without Konrad Adenauer – and vice versa. Konrad Adenauer assisted in paving the way for Ludwig Erhard; and he it was who helped implement his ideas, initially within the Union and subsequently in the parliamentary elections in 1949.
