First Majestic Renews Share Repurchase Program

First Majestic Silver Corp. (“First Majestic” or the “Company”) announced today that its board of directors has approved the extension of its share repurchase program (the “Share Repurchase”) pursuant to a normal course issuer bid in the open market through the facilities of the Toronto Stock Exchange (“TSX”) or alternative Canadian market places over the next 12 months. Pursuant to the Share Repurchase, the Company proposes to repurchase up to 7,783,799 common shares of the Company which represents 5% of the 155,675,982 issued and outstanding shares of the Company as of March 10, 2016.

In order to implement the Share Repurchase, First Majestic has received TSX approval of its notice of intention to make a normal course issuer bid. The notice provides that First Majestic may, during the 12 month period commencing on March 17, 2016 and ending on or before March 16, 2017, purchase up to 7,783,799 common shares through the facilities of the TSX and alternative Canadian marketplaces.

Fifty-one coal workers hired to work in an underground mine in British Columbia have returned to China.

That’s because the Murray River project, being spearheaded by HD Mining International, has been shelved, at least temporarily.

The mine site, about 12 kilometres south of Tumbler Ridge, is being put on care and maintenance until it receives the necessary permits and market conditions improve, according to a company spokesperson.

HD Mining faced intense public pressure in 2012 after it was revealed that the company would employ up to 500 temporary foreign workers (TFW) from China to carry out a bulk sample. Passions were further inflamed when it was discovered that a job posting for working at the mine included Mandarin as a language requirement. HD Mining said it needed workers who had experience in longwall mining, but that it had a plan to transition to Canadian workers, who typically work in “room and pillar” operations.

Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria are expected to declare a federal system imminently, Kurdish officials said on Wednesday, taking matters into their own hands after being excluded from talks in Geneva to resolve Syria’s civil war.

The step aims to combine three Kurdish-led autonomous areas of northern Syrian into a federal arrangement and will be sure to alarm neighboring Turkey, which fears a growing Kurdish sway in Syria is fuelling separatism among its own minority Kurds.

A conference in the Kurdish-controlled town of Rmeilan on Wednesday was discussing a “Democratic Federal System for Rojava – Northern Syria”. Rojava is the Kurdish name for northern Syria.

Conference participants also forecast a failure of U.N.-led talks which began in Geneva this week, in the absence of the Syrian Kurdish PYD party.

Aldar Khalil, a Kurdish official and one of the organizers, told Reuters he anticipated the approval of a new system, and “democratic federalism” was the best one. Idris Nassan, another Kurdish official, expected a declaration of federalism.
