It is a fact that a thunderstorm core chimney breaks aircraft. Vertical shear winds can exceed 400mph in the space of just a few feet. That lear jet got broken in flight. Some control surfaces of the plane were found miles from the crash site. Likely the tail elevator section.
In my flight training days in the midwest in the early 70s, I came out to the field to see an absolutely unbelievable sight. A Cessna 182 is a high-wing plane with diagonal struts from the fuselage out to 2/3 the length of the wing on each side. This plane parked in the field had the outer 1/3 of each wing beyond the strut folded 90 degrees straight UP!
The pilot got caught in a thunderstorm core with approx. 400mph updraft that folded up his wings. The updraft blew the plane out the top of the thundercloud ‘chimney’. Fortunately he was near the airport and managed to land the plane with only 2/3 of his effective wings! He told us the story at the FBO that day. I didn’t have the nerve to fly that day.
