That person may be misguiding people with fear porn. We got enough to worry about.
There’s a whole lot of things that could happen with the magnetic field changing including protecting your skin from the sun and radiation, but scientists say it doesn’t cause earthquakes. Birds depending on magnetic fields and whales. Power grid failure from solar flairs. A pole shift but that happens slowly and can interfere with compass pointing the wrong way.
I looked that up when I was watching it awhile back. They said it’s the other way around. The moving of the plates cause disruption in the magnetic field not the other way around.
- Tectonic Plates: Earthquakes are caused by the movement and sudden shifting of tectonic plates, which release energy as seismic waves. [1]
- Effect vs. Cause: Magnetic field changes usually happen as a result of earthquakes, not the other way around. When rocks deep underground experience high stress or break, changes in rock magnetization (called the piezomagnetic effect) can create small local magnetic or electric field shifts. [1, 2, 3]
- Mainstream Consensus: According to scientific organizations like the U.S. Geological Survey, there is no convincing evidence that magnetic field variations cause earthquakes or serve as reliable standalone predictors. [1, 2]
- Precursors: Some researchers have recorded minor magnetic pulses or shifts days before specific moderate-to-large earthquakes using ground sensors or satellites.
- Debate: While these signals are studied in a field called seismo-electromagnetics, scientists do not agree that they act as a trigger. Instead, they are typically viewed as minor side effects of heavy pre-earthquake rock stress rather than a driving force.
