No atmosphere, no water, no magnetic field, whole planet covered in powerful weedkiller, no soil anyway, perpetual freezing temperatures, little sunlight. Maybe maintain an outpost continually re-supplied from Earth, but actually colonise? Easier to do so on the moon.
If he really wanted something to look forward to, something to get out of bed for, plant a seed and watch it grow, nurturing it, protecting it, until it yields its fruit, and enjoy that fruit of your labours. And share it with others.
