Black Death
Did you know the gene in some people that protected them from getting sick and dying from the plague also protects them from the man made HIV virus.
The genetic link between Black Death survivors and HIV resistance is a gene mutation known as CCR5-delta 32, which stops certain viruses from entering human immune cells. [1, 2]
The CCR5-Delta 32 Mutation
- What it does: The mutation alters the surface of white blood cells. HIV uses this specific cell receptor to enter and infect the body.
- Immunity level: People with one copy of the mutation have delayed HIV progression. People with two copies are largely immune to HIV.
The Scientific Debate
- The Plague Theory: Early researchers proposed that the bubonic plague acted as a massive filter, allowing only people with this gene variant to survive and pass it down.
- Current Doubts: Newer studies suggest the mutation likely existed before the plague, and lab tests show the CCR5 mutation may not actually protect against the plague bacterium (Yersinia pestis) itself.
