BIG | 🇮🇷🇺🇸‼️‼️ Iranian hard-liners secretly sabotaged the fragile peace arrangement with the United States by ordering attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz without the knowledge of President Masoud Pezeshkian or much of Iran’s senior leadership, The New York Times reports.

According to Iranian officials cited by the NYT, the faction behind the July 7 attacks was linked to Hossein Taeb, the influential cleric and former intelligence chief who had opposed the agreement from the beginning. Three commercial vessels were attacked in the strait, prompting Washington to resume major strikes against Iran and intensifying an internal struggle over the country’s direction.

The revelation exposes how deeply divided Iran’s leadership has become over whether to seek an exit from the war or raise the costs for Washington through further escalation. By September, hard-line military figures had reportedly strengthened their position and were advocating increased pressure on U.S. forces and regional energy infrastructure rather than a return to negotiations. The July episode suggests that Tehran’s internal power struggle is no longer merely political, with competing factions capable of influencing decisions that can rapidly alter the course of the wider conflict.
