A couple of years ago my daughter bought an interactive globe for the kids, then aged 4 and 2. I thought it was a cheap tacky thing which wouldn’t last three months, although it spins properly, has a pen for selecting the country and topic and a screen for multiple choice questions. Tap on Iceland and geology and it tells you about volcanoes and glaciers, New Zealand and fauna and it tells you about kiwis and wekas etc. Grandson, now 4, caught me checking the POG and pointed to the flags and said “That’s Canada and that’s America”. His aunt was telling him that we were in New Zealand and we might see a kiwi. “I doubt it,” says he, “they’re nocturnal. They only come out at night.” And he can’t even read yet. It’s just amazing! It’s also the only electronic device they have access to, apart from movie night on Fridays. No TV.

The older one, now nearly 7, is in grade 1 at the local state school where the teachers had to undergo the woke gender variant training which interestingly was organised by the teachers union, not the education department – but we’re not worried. She was at the births of her baby brother and sister which naturally raised some questions, and she’s fully aware that “girls have vaginas and boys have penises”.
