I think a lot of us who were the generation coming out of the depression heard similar story’s including some people no longer trusted banks and hiding their cash under the mattress after the crash of 29. I can understand when things are hard to come by your going to appreciate them more and guard it didn’t happen again and some became outright hoarders which can become a outright hindrance. That’s probably why we talk about preparing for a SHTF event on what to have on hand. Something like that this time would be much worse. They had lived closer to mother Earth to the father in the sky and had skills. After recovery and at the same time the emergence of mass manufacturing there was no need for many of those skills. I don’t just think of myself as we learned some but all the kids of boomers and on? Would their daughters know how to can food, start a garden, sew a patch on a pair of jeans, crochet or knit a sweater and so forth. Cars and other machinery now are more complicated, electrical and more costly to fix vs the days of keeping extra tires, fan belts etc and tools. Even nails could be recycled. I can’t remember who I talked to once who didn’t attract too much attention but I remember saying something about it to someone who was Pizzed as close as I could get in description lol and I didn’t blame him because he went to the supply shop thinking he was going to just replace a headlight. Not these days, he had to practically replace the whole corner of that side of the car because they said its all attached now. Lol
