The fairness doctrine of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), introduced in 1949, was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced.
The FCC eliminated the policy in 1987 and removed the rule that implemented the policy from the Federal Register in August 2011. … FCC, upheld the FCC’s general right to enforce the fairness doctrine where channels were limited. However, the Court did not rule that the FCC was obliged to do so.
In 1985, however, the FCC decided that the doctrine had a “chilling effect” upon freedom of speech. At about that time, representatives of cable and satellite television networks challenged the applicability of the doctrine to their industries.

Comment: Did they start that thing along with the Un-American Activities committee, and they eliminate it because the country was going down and didn’t want it talked about? Is Fox news totally honest, and equitable? I doubt it.
I think the Internet is what screwed and over rode TPTB’s Media, and that’s why they started censoring FB Twitter etc. Trump also pretty much over rode the prior “education” of the public.
