Vale set to receive first-ever wind-powered ore carrier

Vale expects to receive in coming weeks its first-ever mineral transport ship propelled in part by sails, the company said on Thursday.

The ship, a VLOC, or very-large ore carrier, will also be the largest ever to be outfitted by the rotating sails, Vale said in a statement.

The sails in question are large metal cylinders four meters in diameter and 24 meters tall. While underway, the cylinders spin at different velocities, creating air pressure differences that help propel the ship forward

I read that report on Basel 3 ….and can’t believe that the Fed etc would let that happen…..I have often thought that the real possy that the scum can never cover is hidden in the far fwds of the London Mkt, which no-one sees, or reports…it is just rolled over, well before it becomes due/spot…that way it never really settles, as the Feds credit is in theory limitless…they just ‘owe’ JPM a couple of $ trillion, in some account kept in the bottom draw…wink, wink.

So if the London unalocated mkt gets closed down….it can’t happen etc….and as Basel 3 is voluntary, I’m sure they will agree etc.

Consider this:  ALL major indices (SPY, COMP, QQQ, IWM, DIA) bounced precisely at or near their Weekly VSTOPs (volatility stop), one of the most common quant targets on many chart time frames.

While you can’t determine in advance whether downside targets will hold, the mean-reversion automated quant-controlled regime operates UNLESS outsized volume from large buy-side funds enters the picture, which requires allocation changes they are still slow to enact.

No emotion, no data affects weekly/daily moves 95% of the time, been the case for 15+ yrs.

Especially now that the two day SM correction is over.

Looks like the boot has been lifted from the PM’s neck….now the SM has been saved……again.

Basel 3 is on course to regulate the LBMA out of existence. And with it will go all the associated arbitrage business and position-taking on Comex, because most bullion bank trading desks will cease to exist. The only supply to buy-side speculators of gold and silver contracts will be producer hedging.

In recent months there has been some limited commentary concerning the introduction of Basel 3 regulations and the implications for precious metals trading. These new regulations are scheduled to be introduced for European banks at the end of June — only seven weeks’ time — and in the UK from 1 January next, affecting all LBMA member banks.

This article explains the new regulations and concludes that the recent joint LBMA/WGC consultation paper addressed to the British regulator is unlikely to save London’s unallocated gold trading market. And because Basel 3 regulations are scheduled to be introduced into the UK at the year-end all banks in the London gold market can be expected to wind down their exposure well ahead of the deadline.

The unallocated forward settlement market will effectively be shut down. Hedging into Comex futures from this source will also cease. As it is unwound, the withdrawal of synthetic supply has enormous implications for future precious metals prices by transferring pricing power to physical markets, now dominated by China.
