the eye is projected to pass to the east of panama city, at tyndall afb. west of panama city, where the high rise hotels are is technically panama city beach, a separate municipality. i don’t have any info about foundations and the geology there. in many florida locations it’s sand, underlain by clay. here, it’s 8-10 feet of sand, then 80 feet of florida ball kaolin (high grade potter’s clay) then limestone – the floridan aquifer.
…and you’re right, they are broad, shallow buildings – intended to maximize beach exposure. when it’s sunny, that’s just what you want to harvest max tourist dollars. when it’s stormy, then you harvest max foot-pounds of wind force. ooops!!!
