We have enough volcanic heat to power the entire state if fully developed. Problem is getting off the island. The ocean is 13,000 ft deep between here and Maui. For years Hawaiian Electric has tried to invent High Voltage underwater cables that will withstand that depth. So far, no one has succeeded. But that is their ultimate dream… to interconnect the power grids of all the islands, and power it geothermal. Maybe in a century or two… 🙂

I live on the edge of ‘Lava zone 2’ (almost to 3), defined as “Subject to lava downflows” . In fact my back yard has some beautiful ropy lava plates from the lava flow of 1840. Leilani Estates is located on top of the East Rift zone of Kilauea summit. A long, easterly crack in the volcano flank that periodically becomes pressurized and flows lava. Right next to the crack..and it survived the 2018 eruption flow… is the geothermal wells that drilled down into the trapped lava pockets of old eruptions. They trap the hot sulfur dioxide gas and circulate it up to extract heat to run a generator plant. It supplies 20% of our island electricity.
The Iceland crack is scary because it tells of high pressure buildup below, and if the ground is cracking and steaming it could have a blowout at any time. How big? We don’t know how big the pressure bubble is below. I don’t want to hang around to find out.

Until now I heard yeas ago that steam served a purpose to keeps them warm.
I figured it would be some yellow color in it and have a sulphur smell. From what you described it sounds dangerous enough to evacuate or get ready too. Just seeing a big crack like that with steam coming out looks dangerous.

I have experience living on a volcano, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near that crack in Iceland. That volcano is dangerously explosive. Reminds me of the crack that appeared in Leilani Estates just five miles away from me in 2018. It was soon spewing lava. Here, the definition of “Lava Zone 1” is exactly: ‘May erupt at any time’. The area has craters from 1955 and 1960. I can still see the tearful homeowner on TV after her backyard broke open and lava consumed her home. “Well we knew it was Lava Zone 1, but we never thought THIS would happen”, she sobbed. Cognitive dissonance at it’s finest!
Hawaii is a shield volcano that is relatively tame and overflows from time to time. Iceland, on the other hand, is a fiercely explosive subduction volcano at the juncture of major crustal faults. And it looks ready to blow… hard.
