We’re being bombarded with “Save the Children” ads for Yemen famine relief. Here is what wikipedia lists as the cause of the famine:
- Causes: Yemeni civil war (2014–present), Saudi Arabian–led intervention in Yemen, Blockade of Yemen[6], Cultivation and consumption of khat[7], Devastation of Yemeni infrastructure by the Saudi-led coalition bombing, Confiscation of food by Houthi rebels.
Note how “shortage of food” isn’t mentioned. Confiscation of food by Houthi rebels – well that’s OK then, because they will obviously let convoys of rice etc. through to the starving children. Devastation of infrastructure – no problem there either, Save the Children is well known for having fleets of Chinooks in Yemen ready to deliver. Growing drugs – obviously they must have plenty of food anyway, if they can grow mild stimulants.
This plays out everywhere there is a ‘famine’. The only real famine is the lack of political will do do anything, or much more frequently the political will is actually aimed at blocking food to various groups (tribal, again, including Gaza).
If 10% of what you give ever gets through to the kids you intended it for, it’d be a miracle, in every sense of the word. But if you want to keep feeding Houthi rebels, Yemeni govt officials and Save the Children staff, go ahead.
