Americans and Australians lack an historical perspective, not of Russian history, but of their own. The Americans did at least have a Civil War which builds national character but the Aussie history is basically arrive, farm, dig big holes in the ground, do as we’re told in conflicts. Brits look back to the Roman invasion in 44 BC, the Normans in 1066, a civil war, numerous wars, the black plague; things that build a deep national psyche. Russia is the same. They have a national holiday to commemorate when the Poles and Lithuanians were thrown out of Moscow in 1612, the only time the Russian capital was occupied. They have so much intrinsic, intensive history of repelling invaders that the Ukraine skirmish will hardly figure.
