Starbucks announced the closure of hundreds of underperforming North American locations as part of a broader restructuring plan to improve the in-store experience and address six straight quarters of sales declines. Approximately 450 stores are slated to close by the end of the fiscal year, a figure representing about 1% of the company’s North American stores, with 900 corporate jobs also being eliminated. The closures are the result of the company’s “Back to Starbucks” initiative, led by CEO Brian Niccol, with many of the affected stores located in city centers and commercial corridors.
