Completely agree. Wherever I went in Europe I always learned at least a little of the language before I got there. Just making the effort in the home country’s language would go a long way, even if it was as little as “Hello” and “Do you speak English?” in their language. Better still if you could ask your first question or two in their language. The French, by the way, and especially the Parisian French, seemed to have the least tolerance for those who didn’t even make an effort to speak their language. But that’s not why I always made an effort; it just seemed the courteous thing to do; it was their country, not America.
