Because of ‘coking’ for the steel industry , most of SW Pennsylvania was denuded of forests by 100+ years ago . Because the terrain was very hilly , the bare land was not in demand for farming , and was left fallow . Now the trees are back , and thriving .
I am fortunate to own ten acres of hillside forest above the right end of this dam , covered now in various hardwoods , that I hope to leave pristine for my grandchildren , etc.
