I checked. It was October 1973.
I remember it was 1973 because I had just gotten my drivers license that summer

Yes I remember the oil issue and could only get gas on certain days but don’t remember the prices but think it was 1974. The point is it stayed o..a range for years them started going up ever since and with it so does other things. Also can affect plans financially

Those gasoline prices make no sense.
In central Florida the price went from like 29.9-32.9 to $1.00 practically overnight in 1973. Due to ‘Arab oil embargo’. I’m pretty sure the price jump was nationwide.
As I recall, they really never came down from that level.

My daughter just dropped off a electric heater to her friend a single parent with child who were freezing  who could only afford to buy a mobile and heat went out. People just don’t have a lot of money to throw around.

Toyotas are made here. Cars that don’t work right or last for the money aren’t good for our economy.

Toyota and Honda are good cars, but are not good for the USA living standards or for jobs, unless they are made here.

It might over heat if used everyday I’m heavy traffic. When looking for cars for two of my grandsons I waS advised to look for a Toyota because less problems particularly certain years and easier to find parts where older American cars can be hard to find them. The mechanics don’t like these newer cars either some are getting fed up with it. If they want to represent America don’t mess them over. They also know certain things don’t work well, last or break but don’t do anything to fix it. Makes you wonder why.

Also when they’re looking all done now you can get a idea of what are the common problems. Like your GMC

Common problems for a 2001 GMC Jimmy include ABS light issues (control module failure)fuel system problems (pump, filter, sensor failures) causing hard starts/stalls, intake manifold gasket leaksheater core leaks, and electrical glitches like failing power windows/locks and ignition switch contacts, often due to age and wear, requiring consistent maintenance like timely fuel filter/fluid changes to manage.
Engine & Fuel
  • Fuel Delivery: Clogged fuel filters, failing fuel pumps, and dirty fuel level sensors are frequent, leading to rough idling, hard starting, or stalling.
  • Intake Manifold Gasket: Leaks can cause coolant or oil loss and affect engine performance.
  • Ignition System: Worn spark plugs, coils, or a failing crankshaft position sensor can cause rough running and starting issues.
  • Distributor: Internal faults within the distributor can lead to engine problems.
Brakes & Suspension
  • ABS Light: Often indicates a faulty ABS control unit or sensor.
  • Seizing Calipers: A common issue with brake calipers.
  • Ball Joints: Wear on ball joints is reported by owners.
Electrical & HVAC
  • Heater Core: Leaks under the passenger-side dash are a known issue.
  • Power Windows/Locks: Overheating power window motors and failing door lock actuators/switches are common.
  • Ignition Switch: Electrical contacts can fail, affecting ignition.
  • Wipers: A faulty wiper motor control board can cause intermittent operation.
Other Common Issues
  • Transmission: Leaking output seals and general transmission issues may require regular servicing.
  • Check Engine Light: Can be triggered by simple things like a loose gas cap or more complex issues like fuel system leaks or EGR valve problems.

“Biden ignored the Housing Market, and instead was immersed with High Crime, Open Borders, runaway INFLATION, the Afghanistan Disaster, and a Military that he left in Chaos and Confusion. Everything was broken, but I, as President of the United States, have already fixed it! Now, l am giving special attention to the Housing Market. Because I chose not to sell Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in my First Term, a truly great decision, and against the advice of the “experts,” it is now worth many times that amount — AN ABSOLUTE FORTUNE – and has $200 BILLION DOLLARS IN CASH. Because of this, I am instructing my Representatives to BUY $200 BILLION DOLLARS IN MORTGAGE BONDS. This will drive Mortgage Rates DOWN, monthly payments DOWN, and make the cost of owning a home more affordable. It is one of my many steps in restoring Affordability, something that the Biden Administration absolutely destroyed. We are bringing back the AMERICAN DREAM that was destroyed by the last Administration. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

No ego problem here, eh?!

Trouble is, $200 BILLION DOLLARS IN CASH

or perhaps that should be $200 billion dollars in cash

is only 1.5% of the $13.07tn mortgage debt. How much effect can it have? Where is the $2tn revenue from tariffs?

Plus, of course, making mortgages (not houses) more affordable pushes the price of houses up.

Maddog, what price stability?

Posted by ferrett @ 17:07 on January 8, 2026

Not that it is a stable country anyway, and the ayatollahs are inviting interference from outside, because of their outside interference, but Libya and Iraq are complete basket cases. The shah’s regime wasn’t all cuddly bunnies either, though. I guess I’ve argued myself into saying that action needs to be taken to stop the export of islamic terrorism, but I think that should be regarded as a regime removal, not change. Remove the ayatollahs and let the people sort out the alternative themselves. Hopefully they can do that themselves without overt external interventions, because at least they will own the new system.

But, but, I thought Americans were the best engineers on the planet?

Posted by ferrett @ 16:46 on January 8, 2026

How did they get it so wrong, and everyone else get it right? My little French Diesel running light oil changed every 13,000 miles has no problems after 200,000. 17.5 million engines produced, used by Ford, Tata, Citroen.

But what replaces the regime? A Shah? How did that work out last time? Venezuela is already descending into gang chaos as all the petty criminals who ruled courtesy of Maduro rush to secure their territories and root out Maduro/USA supporters. Venezuela is going to be Iraq and Libya all over again. There is no way that the US can influence the post “Special Operation” situation in either country, the MO is seagull diplomacy – fly into the country, do a couple of circuits crapping on everything and fly out again leaving everyone else to clean up the mess. Or not. A result of which is that all Venezuelans, Persians, Afghanis, Iraqis, Libyans etc. end up hating America (and, where applicable, Israel). Just as the founding fathers realised.

The Problems With Thin Viscosity Engine Oil

Posted by Mr.Copper @ 16:35 on January 8, 2026

Pete, do not believe what we have been told about the NEED for thin oil, its all bull shit, and finally being in the news. I know this in 1989 when I bought my new Chevy van. The oil recommended was 5W30 and the bottle called it “energy saving oil” I immediately on my first oil change was Straight 30 Weight Oil.

P.S. This morning I heard Trump is giving $10,00 tax exemptions if you buy an American made car. The IRS will make a list. Also during Ronald Reagan ’81 to ’89 he gave a tax write-off, 5 years instead of 10 years, and all the dumb ass machine shops bought Korean and Japanese equipment.  The write off should have been for US makers

Parts of link below:

For more than a decade, General Motors has leaned heavily into efficiency-focused engine technologies across its V8 lineup. Starting with the 2014 model year, cylinder deactivation features and ultra-lightweight oils like 0W-20 became standard. On paper, this approach worked well. Power output increased and fuel economy improved. However, at the same time, owners’ and enthusiasts’ confidence was fading in the long term reliability of these engines.

That concern came to a head with the 6.2 liter L87 V8. Nearly 600,000 trucks and SUVs from the 2021 through 2024 model years were recalled after GM identified connecting rod failures linked to lubrication issues. The thinner oil was unable to keep its strength when dealing with high loads and temperatures. The result, according to critics and lawsuits, was metal-to-metal contact that led to catastrophic engine failure.

For years, enthusiasts were told modern engines were designed specifically around low viscosity oil. Now, in the wake of widespread failures, GM itself is mandating thicker oil as a corrective measure. At the same time, some owners are suing GM, claiming the switch to 0W-40 increases fuel consumption and lowers vehicle value. The debate has effectively flipped.

The oil strategy that GM developed was built around pressure from regulations like the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards. Models could derive small but meaningful improvements to efficiency by using low viscosity oil, which is why many modern engines use them in the first place. However, recent changes to federal fuel economy rules have reduced that pressure. Without the threat of penalties hanging over them, manufacturers can now afford to prioritize durability, especially with lower fleet targets and rescinded incentives for tech like stop-start.

the oil question has become symbolic. It represents a broader choice between chasing incremental efficiency or restoring confidence in long-term engine durability, and owners have made their preference clear.

Re your “Your blaming everyone but the car makers” No I feel sorry for the American car makers. They had unfair competition and constantly being told by numb sculls how to build them.

Thankfully Trump started telling them they don’t have to worry anymore about how many miles to the gallon they have to get. I myself being in manufacturing business, you NEVER farm out work that we can do in your own shop.

So I will NEVER buy an imported car, in fact I won’t buy ANY new car at all because of all the complicated electronics in them. They are so expensive to fix they go to the junk yard. My car is a 2001 GMC Jimmy, and I consider that too new. My 1989 G20 Van is even better.  My son drives a 1998 GMC Jimmy.

maddog – the Iranian people may love him for it, and Lindsay and BiBi will love him for it, at least until they find another country they want us to bomb. If it goes smoothly, it will be tolerated here – that’s best case for him. Regardless, HIS people, the 70 million that elected him, the folks that work and pay taxes for these adventures, will be left holding the bag and wondering who he works for, because it’s certainly not us.

As far as countries that have been the epicenter of trouble for the world, I think there are probably a few billion people that might say the US and its’ CIA and their meddling around the world would be the epicenter. None of it what the Founding Fathers wanted for the country.

Lastly, Islam is coming to the west, simply because the west has invited them in and welcomed them with open arms. China, Japan, Russia, they’re not worried about Islam. I can certainly understand your concern with Islam in the UK, but your government did that to you. Same thing here, we go and destroy their countries and then bring them to ours – brilliant strategy.

ferret – you speak truth there. RFK Jr. and Tulsi are the only ones doing what we asked them to do. The rest seemed to have found their homes very comfortable in the swamp.

We’ll see what happens, but Trump may have the honor of residing over the country during WWIII, financial collapse, and civil war. I hope not, because all we asked him to do was put the country first, square us up economically, keep us out of war, and hold these government criminals accountable – mostly the ones that wronged HIM and rigged elections. That’s what got him elected.

Silver at $77. That rebalancing was brutal.

Your blaming everyone but the car makers and not bring down our own oil prices. I don’t see cars broken down all over on the side of highways or even in the middle of the road anymore other than a flat tire or not filling the gas before heading out to where the next gas station was 100 miles.
